Dodge Grand Caravan radio ad
Heard a great radio ad for the Dodge Grand Caravan yesterday morning.
Synopsis:
Mom's voice talking about how her son came home the other day, his friend's family had bought a Grand Caravan and he starting asking his mother why their Toyota minivan doesn't have swivel seats, and separate fold out cupholders. Mother explained that their Toyota was built before those things were invented. Also, son wanted to know why theirs doesn't have separate DVD players and GPS tracking; again, built before those things invented. Mother then stated that she challenged son to move with other family if he didn't like it - now, she's on the radio, asking him to come back home - they'll buy one - "I love you, son!"
I suspect that the ad man who wrote and sold Dodge this ad does, in fact, drive a Toyota. I believe this because of the subtle implication: if the Toyota was built before these things were invented, then it was built almost 10 years ago, and the fact that should be inferred is that THE TOYOTA IS STILL RUNNING!! That Dodge will probably be dead within 2 years, 3 or 4 TOPS! But the Toyota is still going strong, because whatever bells and whistles the American car companies want to sell us, the fact is that they don't make good quality lasting vehicles.
And that's another thing - the mother NEVER mentions a darn thing about the quality of the GC - it's all the incidentals, which, quite frankly, are all the extras that are nice but lend nothing truly to the essential value of the vehicle (things like gas mileage, dependability, low maintenance, lifespan, crash rating)
SO - the American car companies still think they can sell us with bells and whistles, and haven't realized that what we truly want is for one of these guys to come out and tell us that they are going to build solid, quality vehicles that have better gas mileage than these Jap cars. I want Dodge to come out and tell me "Hey, Verble, if you buy this Grand Caravan, you are still going to be enjoying the darn thing in 2018, and the only time it'll have been in the shop is for an oil change every 3,000 miles!"
That's what I want from a car, not dual DVD's and swivel seats - you can take those and
well . . .
you know what do to with 'em.
